LET THE BODY

Let the body's movement direct the music

Performance art  |  Circuitry

PROJECT OVERVIEW: Most dance is choreographed to existing music; the sound informs the movement. On occasion, sound and movement are improvised simultaneously. Let the Body is an aerial dance piece designed to let the body's movement direct the music.

In this experimental performance, I attached LEDs to my fingers, toes and hair, then danced in the dark on a suspended hoop, surrounded by theremin-type devices that I built to emit noise based on changes in ambient light. As my body moved through the hoop and spun through the dark space, the LEDs triggered changes in the electronic soundscape.

This is my final project for Media, Time and Technology Art at University of Washington, a class I took in 2013 for the fun of it.

MY ROLES: Ideation, circuitry, installation, performance, video editing
